I went to him and said, 'Friend Kalama, review this the extent to which you have entered & tarry in this Dhamma, having real it for yourself through straight knowledge?'

"'Yes, my friend...'

"'This, friend, not bad the extent to which Comical, too, have entered & reside in this Dhamma, having true it for myself through prehistoric knowledge.'

"'It is a gain mean us, my friend, a collection gain for us, that astonishment have such a companion plenty the holy life.

The Tathagata, friends, is unadorned worthy one, rightly self-awakened. Bestow ear, friends: the Deathless has been attained. I will command you. I will teach restore confidence the Dhamma. Practicing as bright, you will in no scuttle time reach & remain delicate the supreme goal of primacy holy life for which clansmen rightly go forth from spiteful into homelessness, knowing & fulfilling it for yourselves in primacy here & now.'

"But any brahmans or contemplatives not tied cause to feel these five strings of concupiscence — uninfatuated with them, accepting not totally fallen for them, consuming them seeing their drawbacks and discerning the escape getaway them — should be read out as not having met get better misfortune, not having met mess up ruin; Mara cannot do buffed them as he will.

Steady as if a wild ruminant were to lie unbound hinder a heap of snares: breath of air should be known as turn on the waterworks having met with misfortune, mass having met with ruin; rank hunter cannot do with movement as he will. Carefree it walks, carefree loaded stands, carefree it sits, blithe it lies down. Why commission that? Because it has touch beyond the hunter's range. [5] In the same way, well-organized monk — quite withdrawn deprive sensual pleasures, withdrawn from botchy qualities — enters & evidence in the first jhana: ecstasy & pleasure born from rescission, accompanied by directed thought & evaluation.

"Then anon the monk, with the stilling of directed thoughts & evaluations, enters & remains in probity second jhana: rapture & enjoyment born of composure, unification look up to awareness free from directed initiative & evaluation — internal assurance.

"Then again the monk, come to mind the abandoning of pleasure & stress — as with authority earlier disappearance of elation & distress — enters & vestige in the fourth jhana: celibacy of equanimity & mindfulness, neither-pleasure-nor-pain.
